Nicknames
Most guys who know me, know me as 'ND'. If I call them up and say "Hey, this is Nikhil Sharma", half of them will just hang up thinking its a wrong number. Even parents of someof my good friends also know me as ND. Well, if Matc calls my place and introduces himself as 'Abhijit' then even I have to think for a while to make sure which 'Abhijit' I am talking to...whether its 'Abhijit the Pandya', 'Abhijit the Gokhs' or 'Abhijit the Matc' or someone else. So you see now why nicknames are so important and why you should always introduce yourselves by your nickname.
Now, nicknames are not always very convinient. Many of my pals actually believe that my nickname is 'Andy'. The fact that pronounciation of 'ND' is somuch similar to 'Andy', is enough to ignore the 'two-alphabetic' option.
One day I called 'Purya' and asked whether he was home or otherwise. Someone answered, "This is 'Purya'. But which purya do you want to talk to... 'Purya the Senior' or 'Purya the Junior' ?"... I was talking to my pal's uncle then.
